Guidelines for implementation of the ISM code by companies

Management


The International Management Code for the Safe Operation of Ships and for Pollution Prevention (International Safety Management (ISM) Code) was adopted by the Organization by resolution A.741(18) and became mandatory by virtue of the entry into force on 1 July 1998 of SOLAS chapter IX on Management for the Safe Operation of Ships. The purpose of this Code is to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.

The 106th session of the Maritime Safety Committee was held from 2 to 11 November 2022, chaired by Mrs. Mayte Medina (United States). The Vice-Chair of the Committee, Mr. Theofilos Mozas (Greece), was also present. A brief of the meeting outcomes in relation to the adopted mandatory instruments, has been mentioned in this article.

SOLAS New Chapter XV

Regulations


Following the outcome of the 106th session of the Maritime Safety Committee held in London in November 2023, a new chapter (Ch. XV) SOLAS entitled "Safety measures for ships carrying industrial personnel" has been added to this convention and will come into force on July 1, 2024.

Updated Amendments (06-21) of IMSBC Code

In April 2022, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) updated its International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code with Resolution MSC.500(105), providing amendments to the code which will enter into force on December 1, 2023. From January 1, 2023, ship operators may opt for voluntary compliance.
