Notice of the SOx Emission Control Areas in Republic of Korea


The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of republic of south Korea has announced the “SOX Emission Control Area” in major Korean Ports, which strengthens the sulfur content standard of ship fuel oil to 0.10% or less according to Article 10 (1) of the “The Special Act on the Improvement of Air Quality in Port Areas, Etc.”

All vessel in operation (sailing and anchoring/mooring) within Korea SECA are to be fulfilled this requirement from 1st January 2022 and all ships should be completed fuel oil change over to 0.10% low sulphur fuel oil, at the entrance in Korea SECA, and will be required to continue use compliant fuel while they are inside the designated Korea SECA.

For the vessel which equipped with approved EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning System), it’s axiomatic the using of 0.10% low sulphur fuel oil won’t be mandatory. (No restrictions on wash water for open-loop scrubber)
