The 106th session of the Maritime Safety Committee was held from 2 to 11 November 2022, chaired by Mrs. Mayte Medina (United States). The Vice-Chair of the Committee, Mr. Theofilos Mozas (Greece), was also present. A brief of the meeting outcomes in relation to the adopted mandatory instruments, has been mentioned in this article.

Ventilation Performance Test of Inflatable Liferafts – New Requirements

Recently, at the latest meeting of the IMO maritime safety committee (MSC 106), a new test called the “Ventilation Performance Test” was approved. The new test procedure will circulate after adoption at the next MSC meeting. Nautical Publications & IMO Instruments Requirements

The Maritime Safety Committee, at its eighty-first session (10 to 19 May 2006), and the Marine Environment Protection Committee, at its fifty-third session (18 to 22 July 2005), in order to give guidance on the carriage of publications on board ships, approved the IMO requirements on carriage of publications on board ships as set out in the article. The publications (regardless of formats) which to be kept onboard ships are listed in below table.

Electronic Inclinometer - New SOLAS Requirement

The 107th session of the Maritime Safety Committee was held from 31 May to 9 June 2023. In this regard, Committee adopted the proposed amendments to chapter V of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, in relation carriage of electronic inclinometer. This amendment should be deemed to have been accepted on 1 July 2025 and enter into force on 1 January 2026.

Solid Bulk Cargoes For Which Fixed Gas Fire-Extinguishing System May Be Exempted

The Maritime Safety Committee, at its 107th session (31 May to 9 June 2023), approved a revision of MSC.1/Circ.1395/Rev.5, in relation to lists of solid bulk cargoes for which a fixed gas fire-extinguishing system may be exempted or for which a fixed gas fire-extinguishing system is ineffective, as set out in the article.

MSC Confirms Order with Fincantieri for Cruise Ships with Fuel Cells

The cruise division of MSC Group has confirmed an order for two additional luxury cruise ships to be built by Fincantieri and outfitted with hydrogen fuel cells for its Explora Journeys brand. They had signed a memorandum of intent a year ago to revise and increase the order for the Explora cruise ships bringing the total value of the shipbuilding project to €3.5 billion ($3.7 billion) by 2028.
